Supporting Spring Clean-Up (Street Sweeping)

Parking bans, fines and enforcement Supporting spring clean-up (street sweeping)

Move your vehicle from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Mon – Fri) to avoid parking ticket

Every spring, The City of Calgary sweeps streets across the city to remove sand, debris and gravel left behind after winter. This helps keep neighbourhoods safe, clean and ready for the warmer months.

This page explains what street sweeping means for parking, how enforcement works and where to find the right information for your street.

What’s new for 2026

Street sweeping happens every year, but how we share information about it continues to evolve. We’ve refreshed this page to make it easier to understand what to expect, why parking restrictions are in place and how parking enforcement works during street sweeping.

You’ll find clearer explanations, more useful tools and regular updates throughout the season.

Find your sweeping day

Street sweeping schedules vary by neighbourhood. Before sweeping begins, the best way to plan ahead is to check when your street is scheduled.

Seasonal progress

We know people — including residents and media — often look for timely information during street sweeping. We’ll share a weekly update every Tuesday showing the volume of parking tickets issued during street sweeping.

This information helps provide transparency and shows how enforcement activity changes week‑by‑week as the program progresses.

2026 Street sweeping enforcement activity

  • The first update will appear once enforcement begins.
  • Updates are posted weekly throughout the season until June 30.

Posted signs on your street are the final authority for when a parking ban is in effect.

Street sweeping parking bans: how they work

Temporary parking bans are put in place so crews can safely and efficiently sweep city streets. The City endeavours to install street sweeping signs as early as possible — in many cases up to 72 hours in advance.

However, a street sweeping ban is considered valid once signage is posted and verified at least 12 hours before enforcement begins, which is the minimum notice required. This approach reflects real‑world conditions such as rolling schedules, limited signage inventory, weather and operational changes throughout the season.

Parking enforcement during street sweeping

Parking enforcement supports street sweeping by helping keep streets clear so crews can do their work.

Enforcement may include:

  • Ticketing vehicles parked in signed street sweeping zones
  • Towing vehicles that block sweeping operations

Enforcement typically runs between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., depending on location and schedule.

How camera enforcement works

During the ban window, Calgary Parking camera‑enforcement vehicles patrol communities scheduled for sweeping. If a vehicle is still parked on the street, it may be tagged and a ticket is issued by mail to the registered owner.

Tickets may arrive several days later. Not seeing a paper ticket on your windshield does not mean enforcement didn’t occur.

Education over enforcement

Our goal is to help people understand how to park safely and legally during street sweeping — not just to issue tickets. This page focuses on explaining parking rules, why restrictions exist and what drivers can do to avoid disruption.

Towing during street sweeping

Some areas have additional “No Parking” signage where vehicles may be ticketed and towed. These bans are indicated by 3foothigh square “No Parking” signs placed along the roadway. They will be placed at least 12 hours before street sweeping.

If a vehicle is parked in a signed street sweeping zone, it may be towed so crews can complete their work. Some vehicles are towed nearby, while others may be taken to the Municipal Impound Lot.

If you think your vehicle has been towed nearby, you can call Citywide Towing at 4032879111 to find out where your vehicle was relocated.

Street sweeping ticket fines

If a vehicle is left on the street during a sweeping ban, you may be subject to a fine (and/or an impound fee in cases of a tow).

Payment timing Fine
If paid within 10 days $80
If paid within 30 days $90
Fine amount after 30 days $120

Parking options during street sweeping

During street sweeping, you may choose to park:

  • On nearby streets where sweeping is not scheduled
  • In Driveways, garages and back lanes (make sure you leave enough clearance when parking in a back lane).
  • In Private lots (with the owner’s permission).
  • In Calgary Parking parkades or parking lots (payment is required when parking in these locations).

Frequently asked questions

Signs and street sweeping

Why is there a parking ban for street sweeping — and why does it run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.?

Street sweeping works best when crews can clean curbtocurb. Parked vehicles block sweepers from reaching the curb line, where most gravel and debris collects. That’s why community sweeping includes a temporary parking ban — it helps crews complete the work safely and efficiently and helps keep neighbourhood streets cleaner and easier to travel for everyone.

Community sweeping happens Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The full‑day window matters because sweepers may need multiple passes and crews may return to finish a route. Even if a sweeper has already gone by once, the ban still applies until 4 p.m.

Calgary’s Spring Clean‑up program covers over 17,000 lane kilometres of paved roads each season — so the program relies on consistent rules that help crews move through many communities each day.

Why are there fewer signs than before? How do you make sure signage is accurate and fair?

Signs are still a key part of the program. Ahead of sweeping, “No Parking on Street” boards are placed at major entrances in a community so residents travelling through the area can see them. Calgary Parking works with Mobility crews to confirm signage is deployed and that the information is accurate before the ban is validated.

Calgary Parking’s Safety and Compliance Officers validate that street sweeping bans are accurate and visible before the ban begins (typically at least 12 hours prior).

If there is ever a conflict between online information and what’s posted in your neighbourhood, The City’s guidance is clear: posted signage prevails.

Schedule and weather

What if the schedule changes due to weather or equipment issues — and what should residents do?

The weather can affect sweeping. To reduce confusion, the City provides three reliable ways to stay informed:

  1. Check your address in the lookup.
  2. Sign up for email/text alerts.
  3. Follow posted signs in your community.

If the online schedule differs from onstreet signage, the posted signage prevails.

Tickets and towing

I moved my car after the sweeper passed. Why did I still get a ticket?

Since the ban is in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the full day, not just while the sweeper is visible on your street. Sweepers may make multiple passes and the street may be re‑swept later in the day to remove remaining debris.

The simplest way to avoid a ticket is to keep your vehicle off the street for the entire ban window, even if you think sweeping is already finished.

If online information ever differs, the onstreet signs for your area are the final authority.

Why didn’t I see a paper ticket on my windshield? How does camera enforcement work?

During Spring Clean‑up, Calgary Parking supports the program using cameraequipped enforcement vehicles. If a vehicle is still parked on the street during a ban, it can be captured by the enforcement vehicle and processed, and a ticket is issued by mail to the registered owner.

This approach helps the program run safely and efficiently by reducing roadside stops and keeping traffic moving while crews are working. It also means you may receive the ticket days later and you may not see a ticket on the vehicle at the time.

Some tickets require additional processing time, so early counts are not always final. This is why weekly reporting is typically updated on a set cadence.

Why don’t you just tow every vehicle that’s parked during street sweeping?

Since towing every non‑compliant vehicle is not practical or necessary to run the program citywide. Street sweeping can involve multiple communities each day, and the program is designed to work primarily through clear notice, compliance, and consistent enforcement.

Towing is reserved for specific situations where it’s needed to keep the route clear. Some areas have additional tow‑away restrictions marked by 3foothigh square “No Parking” signs placed along the roadway. In those signed areas, vehicles may be ticketed and towed because they would otherwise block sweeping operations.

If a vehicle is moved to a nearby space, Calgary Parking pays for the tow. If the vehicle is taken to the Municipal Impound Lot, the owner pays the ticket, tow and impound fees.

How many tickets do you issue during street sweeping — and how should people interpret weekly numbers?

Street sweeping enforcement volumes can be significant, which is why we focus on predictable rules and clear tools so people can avoid tickets in the first place. In 2025, over 34,175 tags were issued as of June 18, 2025 (noting that final totals can take additional time due to processing).

Weekly counts are helpful for transparency, but they are not always final. Some tickets need additional processing time, which is why totals can change. In past practice, weekly figures have been updated on Tuesdays to allow time for processing and verification.

How many tickets were issued in past years?

Throughout the season, this section will be updated weekly with enforcement activity and frequently asked questions related to street sweeping.

This allows anyone who wants more detail to see how things are progressing week‑by‑week.
