Journey to parking sustainability
Calgary Parking is working to make parking more sustainable. Our focus is on reducing emissions, using resources wisely, and making it easier for Calgarians to choose greener options.
-
Green Fleet
Goal: Increase the share of electric vehicles in our fleet to 38% by 2028
Current status: 70% of our fleet vehicles are green
-
EV chargers
Goal: Have over 100 chargers by the end of 2026, with plans to add level-3 chargers in select parkades.
Current status: Over 50 chargers are available across eight parkades, making it easier for Calgarians who are interested in electric vehicles to make the switch.
-
Solar panels
Current status: Installed at the Municipal Impound Lot, with future goals to expand wherever feasible
-
Bicycle lockers
Current status: 270 secure bicycle stalls are available for monthly parking at six parkades. We are also running a pilot with Bikeep at City Centre Parkade which adds five secure racks and five secure lockers.
Sustainable parking solutions
Calgary Parking actively implements practical solutions to reduce our environmental impact. From technology upgrades to resource conservation, we are making changes that support a more sustainable city.
These efforts help Calgarians play their part in protecting the environment while enjoying affordable and convenient parking options.
-
Solar energy
Many of our parking pay machines are powered by solar panels. We are also adding solar panels to facilities across the city to reduce emissions and provide clean, renewable electricity to the grid.
-
Lighting
We're brightening our facilities with low-energy LED lights, paving the way for a greener tomorrow! These lights use less electricity and help reduce our overall environmental impact.
-
EV charging
We've equipped our parkades with multiple charging stations to support electric vehicle use. Electric vehicle owners also receive priority on monthly contract waitlists.
-
Bike amenities
We support sustainable travel by offering bicycle parking at select parkades. Monthly bicycle parking is available, with secure stalls to support people who choose to bike.
-
Wayfinding
We are improving signage and wayfinding in parkades and on city streets. Clear signs and real‑time displays showing available stalls help drivers find parking faster. Less circling means less traffic and fewer emissions.
-
Green payment options
Digital and virtual payment options reduce paper use and make parking faster and easier for customers.
-
Green enforcement
We use advanced technology and virtual enforcement to reduce the need for enforcement vehicles. This improves efficiency while lowering emissions.
-
Water preservation
We reduce water use by cleaning parkades only when needed and washing vehicles less often. We are also planning to use rain collection barrels to support operational water needs.
Green achievements
- 78% - percentage of violations handled virtually with advanced enforcement
- 70% - percentage of bicycle parking stalls that are occupied
- 25% - reduction in electricity consumption achieved by switching to low-energy lights in our facilities
- 25% - water consumption reduced by implementing water preservation tactics
- 55 - number of EV charging stations we have across our parkades
