Fines and tips for parking recreational vehicles on city streets in residential areas

Residential RV Parking

Park your RV safely and responsibly on city streets in residential areas to avoid parking fines

Having a recreational vehicle (RV) is freedom, but it comes with responsibilities. From long-time RV owners to new RV renters, knowing and following the bylaws related to recreational vehicles will help you avoid getting a parking ticket or a fine.

April 1 and October 31

You can park an RV on your front driveway for three consecutive days if you have a front driveway. After three days, you must move it to another location (a campground or storage lot) for at least two days (a minimum of 48 hours). Street parking is not allowed at this time if you have a front driveway.

If you don't have a front driveway, you can park your RV on the street in front of your house for up to three consecutive days. After three days, you must move it to another location (a campground or storage lot) for at least two days (a minimum of 48 hours) before you can return your RV to the parking spot on your street. There are no extra street parking spaces for RVs during the summer months.

November 1 and March 31

Your RV can only be parked on the street in front of your home for three consecutive days. After that, your RV must be relocated off-site for a minimum of 48 hours (to a campground or storage lot) before it can be parked in the parking spot on your street. Parking on your front driveway is not allowed at this time.

Tips on avoiding fines

Here are seven tips on safely and legally parking RVs on residential streets to avoid fines

  • Learn more about the bylaws: The best way to know the bylaws is to read them. Please refer to the Traffic and Community Standards Bylaws for regulations on parking your RV.
  • Don't block sight lines: Avoid parking your RVs in areas that could obstruct intersections, crosswalks, playgrounds and traffic signals, as these represent potential safety risks. It is advisable to park in spots where the surroundings have clear sight lines. If not, find a spot further away where you are sure that nobody's view is affected.

  • Park in your driveway: If you have a front driveway, park there during the months you are allowed to. Do not park in a way that extends your RV onto the sidewalk or delays your neighbours from entering their driveways.
  • Respect and talk to your neighbours: When parking on the street, avoid parking in front of your neighbour's house, especially on narrow streets or in areas with limited parking. As often as you can, maintain good relationships with your neighbours, as long-term RV parking can lead to complaints and potentially more serious disagreements. If you plan to park your RV on the street for a few days, even if it's outside your house near other people's property, let them know. Open communication leads to trust and respect.

  • No detached trailers on streets: All removable vehicle trailers or campers must be properly attached to your towing vehicle when located on any city street or alley. If your trailer is on the street and is detached from your towing vehicle at any time, you may get a ticket.
  • Use designated storage: when your RV is not being used, consider keeping it in a suitable storage facility in line with the bylaws related to recreational vehicles.
