What drivers need to know about parking this winter
Helping everyone arrive safely: Parking around Calgary’s mosques during Ramadan
As snow returns to Calgary, The City’s winter crews are hard at work keeping roads safe and accessible for everyone. We are working alongside The City of Calgary Mobility team to support snow and ice clearing efforts — and to help drivers understand what to expect when it comes to parking during winter weather.
Current status:
- No snow route parking ban has been declared at this time
- Paid parking is allowed on snow routes during the day, where signage permits
- Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and sign up for parking ban alerts
During winter weather, our collaboration with The City of Calgary Mobility team allows snow clearing crews to work more efficiently and helps keep travel lanes, emergency routes and transit corridors open.
“Snow route parking bans are an important tool when they’re needed,” said Todd Sullivan, leader of parking patrol and investigation at The City of Calgary. “When vehicles are off snow routes, Roads crews can clear snow faster and more safely — which benefits everyone using Calgary’s transportation network.”
At this time, no parking ban is in effect, but winter conditions can change quickly.
Be ready: Sign up for snow route parking alerts
One of the easiest ways drivers can help support winter operations — and avoid tickets or towing — is by staying informed.
Calgarians can sign up to receive email or text notifications when:
- A snow route parking ban is coming into effect
- A ban is active
- A ban has been lifted
Notifications are issued by The City and provide advance notice so drivers have time to move their vehicles if needed. Sign up for snow route parking alerts by visiting https://www.calgary.ca/roads/conditions/snow.html
Drivers are reminded to always follow posted signage and avoid parking in ways that block travel lanes, sidewalks or snow clearing operations.
A shared responsibility for winter safety
Winter parking isn’t just about avoiding a ticket — it’s about keeping Calgary moving safely.
“When drivers park responsibly during snow events, it helps protect snow clearing crews, improves visibility for everyone on the road and supports safer conditions for people walking, wheeling, and taking transit,” Todd Sullivan added.
This winter response reflects The City’s broader commitment to a safe and sound, livable and vibrant city, where people can get where they need to go — even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
