Celebrating 25 years of Calgary’s Udderly Art Cow project
This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of Calgary’s most whimsical and beloved public art initiatives, the Udderly Art Cow Project. Launched in 2000, the project transformed downtown Calgary into a pasture of creativity, featuring over 100 life-sized fiberglass cows painted by local artists and sponsored by businesses and organizations. Each cow was a canvas for imagination, adorned with vibrant designs, clever themes, and community pride.
Inspired by similar global art movements, Udderly Art was more than just a visual delight, it was a charitable powerhouse. After their public display, the cows were auctioned off, raising over $1.2 million for charities. The project brought smiles to thousands, sparked conversations, and helped redefine how Calgarians engage with public art.

While many of the cows now reside in private collections across North America, a special herd remains accessible to the public. Several of these iconic bovines, including fan favorites like “Chew-Choo” and “Midnight Cowgirl” can be found grazing in the Udderly Art Legacy Pasture, located along the Plus 15 walkway of the Centennial Parkade on 9th Avenue SW.
Whether you’re a longtime Calgarian or a curious visitor, this quirky collection offers a nostalgic glimpse into the city’s artistic spirit and community heart. As we celebrate 25 years of painted cows and creative expression, the Udderly Art Cow Project reminds us that art can be joyful, impactful, and “udderly” unforgettable.
So next time you’re strolling downtown, take a detour through the Plus 15 and say hello to the herd. They’re still moo-ving hearts and minds, one hoof at a time.
