What is a truck?
City of Calgary bylaws define a truck as a vehicle used for transporting goods and materials of any kind.

Parking your truck
The Calgary Parking Authority (CPA) enforces all non-moving violations of trucks and other vehicles on public streets in Calgary.

Question

I use my truck for work. Can I bring it home at night?

Answer

You may park on the street at any time if the registered maximum weight of your vehicle is less than 4,000 kg. If the maximum weight of your vehicle is more than 4,000 kg but less than 5,450 kg, you can park without a permit* during the day from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

*If a Residential Parking Permit (RPP) is required for the area in which the vehicle is parked, then a valid RPP must be displayed in the vehicle.

If your truck weighs more than 4,000 kg and is parked after 8:00 p.m. and before 8:00 a.m., you may be fined under Calgary Traffic Bylaw 26M96 Section 18(1)(b).

Trucks with a maximum weight in excess of 5,450 kg may park at a residence only to make a delivery (e.g. furniture) or supply a service (e.g. landscaping).

Question

I make deliveries with my truck in the downtown area. Where can I load or unload?

Answer

Downtown is an unrestricted truck zone. Most areas have loading docks or loading zones but don't forget to note the maximum time limits for loading and unloading.

If your vehicle is registered commercially and you use the alleys, try to make your deliveries before or after the rush hours.

Question

When can I park off the truck route?

Answer

A person may be off the truck route to obtain fuel, to obtain repairs, accommodation or food at a commercial premise. In these situations, the truck must have no more than three axles, including the front axle.

Otherwise, trucks may leave a designated truck route only to collect or deliver cargo or supply a service, and must take the most direct, accessible connection between the nearest truck route and their destination.

Question

Can I lodge a complaint against a neighbour who has parked a large truck in his/her driveway or backyard?

Answer

To voice a complaint regarding a truck parked in your neighbour's driveway or yard, contact Land Use and Mobility, Development Inspection Services at 268-5415.

Question

Can I park my truck in a vacant lot?

Answer

Yes, with prior permission from the property owner. Be aware that restrictions may apply, such as a maximum 4,000 kg gross vehicle weight in residential areas.

Question

What if someone parks a truck in my driveway or on my vacant property without my permission?

Answer

A person cannot park any vehicle (including a truck) on private property without permission of the property owner. Under the Calgary Land Use Bylaw 2P80, Section 20(10), trucks with a maximum gross weight of over 4,000 kg cannot be parked on private property in residential areas without a valid development permit from the City of Calgary Land Use and Mobility. For more information on applying for a development permit, contact Land Use and Mobility at 268-5353.

If you are a property owner and someone has parked on your property without your permission, you may call CPA to have the vehicle in question removed. CPA is not entitled to act upon requests to remove trucks and other vehicles from anyone other than private property owners, or a person(s) designated by the owner.
